First pilot at the scene says Cleo probably went missing before the search began
A pilot who was one of the first people to begin the search for Cleo Smith’s disappearance said the four-year-old likely left the area long before police arrived at the scene.
Justin Borg received a desperate call from Cleo’s parents on Saturday morning, begging him to help locate a missing preschooler.
Mr. Borg’s team spent the entire day scouring the landscape, but saw nothing that would shed light on Cleo’s disappearance.
He told the Western Australian: ‘We were exhausting the block of possibilities by asking’ where are we going to look next? We were pretty sure she wasn’t in the area when we did our second search. When we go looking for someone, if he’s around, you find him very quickly. Especially if you are talking about abnormal colors.
Mr Borg said the pink jumpsuit Cleo wore when she disappeared would have clearly stood out in the landscape.
“We flew to a height where we were just glancing over the countryside. And then when we couldn’t find anything on the wide area search, we started a slower, deeper search, ”he continued.
“We made sure to look under every rock, every tree and every bush with the helicopter. ”
