While Paramount pitched the Seventh Paranormal Activity – written by franchise veteran Christopher Landon – as a fresh start for the series, a fan of the Paranormal Activity Wiki may have just figured out how the so-called Pillar reboot horror of the images found may in fact take place in the already established continuity of the series.
A late revelation about the demonic presence that plagues characters throughout Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin connects the events of the film to the surprisingly complex mythology of paranormal activity 1-6. Read on for all the details!

Throughout Next of Kin, the main character Margot is on the hunt for her birth mother, who abandoned her when she was a baby. Her search leads her to Beiler Farm, an Amish community that isn’t quite what it is after all. The farm is more of a prison for the demon Asmodeus, a particularly powerful prince of darkness, and the “Amish” are a clan of religious protectors who have succeeded in binding Asmodeus to a single lineage. Women of this lineage serve as hosts for the demon and pass the burden on to their daughters. Margot’s biological mother, Sarah, was Asmodeus’ last host… and the rest today. A prisoner at the back of the farm, Sarah abandoned Margot rather than subject her to the ruin Asmodeus would cause her body and mind, and judging by Sarah’s worse appearance at the end of Next of Kin, it was quite a sacrifice to make.
Next of Kin ends with Margot putting Sarah out of her misery and escaping the Beiler Farm with her friend Chris, but it’s not a happy ending. Asmodeus possesses Sam Beiler, Margot’s cousin, and escapes the farm, free to chase down Margot or wreak havoc on other unsuspecting people who refuse to put their cameras down under deadly dangerous circumstances. It’s a starting point for new stories in a new continuity, but “Asmodeus” isn’t a lightly chosen name (you know, like a main character named “Chris”). In fact, the name seems to be how Paramount leaves the door open to tie Next of Kin to the original canon.
The best horror movies of the 90s
It all comes down to the demon who tormented the character of the previous six films: Tobi. First named in Paranormal Activity 3, Tobi is how the demon presents himself to characters in every movie thereafter. This is a fact noticed by Father Todd in Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension in 2015, the last entry in the franchise. Father Todd asks the girl who sees Tobi if he’s ever used another name, as demons often change names to hide their identities. And Next of Kin might find out that Tobi has finally returned to living under his true identity. As an update of Paranormal Activity Fan Wiki ‘Tobi’s’ page by user NoraFromQueens highlights, Asmodeus is a demon from the historical book of Tobit. Tobit… like Tobi… hey, maybe the demon’s name is spelled “Tobit” and the “t” is silent! Maybe the subtitles got wrong all this time!
The connection can’t be an accident, but whether Next of Kin and Tobi’s Asmodeus are one is an open question. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, which takes place in 2013, ended with Tobi actually attaining human form, with nothing stopping him from achieving the nefarious goals he wanted. But in Next of Kin, set in 2021, Asmodeus appears to have been trapped in Sarah’s body for decades. The deadlines don’t quite match up, but if you’re a fan of Paranormal Activity, you know that’s okay! Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones introduced time travel to the franchise, through doors designed with runes. Heck, at one point, protagonist Jesse is sucked through space-time and pop back in his living room a few moments later. The Ghost Dimension further shreds the fabric of reality by having a recording of Kristi (a major character from Paranormal Activity 2 and 3 as a young girl) from 1988 who can describe the room the characters watch the tape in in the story. 2013.
It is conceivable that sometime after Tobi succeeded in taking human form in 2013, a character could have found a way to expel the demon from his present and send him back to time (or another universe entirely) where he clings to the Beilers. at some point in the past. Ali Rey, the protagonist of Paranormal Activity 2, is still alive and even helped Hector and Marisol from The Marked Ones find the hiding place of the midwives, the clan responsible for summoning Tobi in the previous Paranormal Activity films. . It’s pretty much a hallmark of Paranormal Activity movies to place new entries between or before others, so Paramount + has plenty of room to fill in the gaps depending on the degree to which Next of Kin ends up resonating with fans (which can be a struggle, in my opinion).
Nice catch, NoraFromQueens! So what do you think? Is Next of Kin a secret sequel or is “Asmodeus” just a nod from Christopher Landon to the “Tobi” of paranormal activity from the past? Let us know what you think in the comments!
