Ted Sarandos issued a new statement following backlash from its support for Dave Chappelle‘s recent comedy special.

Over the weekend, the CEO of Netflix found himself in hot water with fans and activists because of his support for the special, where Dave made several anti-trans statements.

In a new interview with Variety, Ted admits he fucked up.

“I messed up this internal communication. I did it and messed it up in two ways, ”he says. “First and foremost, I should have led with a lot more humanity. This meant that I had a group of employees who were really feeling pain and grief because of a decision we made. And I think that needs to be recognized up front before I get into the details of anything. I did not do this.

Ted added, “It wasn’t characteristic for me, and it was moving fast and we were trying to answer some really specific questions that were floating around. We landed with much more general and factual things that are not at all accurate. “

He continued, “Storytelling has a real impact in the real world. I repeat this because that’s why I work here, that’s why we do what we do. This impact can be extremely positive, and it can be very negative. So, I would have been better in this communication.

“They were joining a conversation already underway, but out of context. But it happens, internal emails go out. In all of my communications, I should be leaning on humanity from the start and not making a general statement that could land very differently than expected.

“According to the definition of ‘does he intend to cause physical harm? “I do not believe that this falls into hate speech”, Ted reiterates. “I don’t believe there have been many calls to remove it. “
