TEL AVIV & PARIS, October 13, 2021– (BUSINESS WIRE) –MyHeritage, the world’s leading service to uncover your past and strengthen your future, today announced the publication of 463 million historical documents from France. The collections published by MyHeritage offer the most comprehensive coverage available for civil status records of France in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Until now, they have been available exclusively through Filae, a leading French genealogy company recently acquired by MyHeritage. By the end of the year, MyHeritage will release hundreds of millions of additional Filae records, further strengthening its position as the market leader in European genealogy.

The addition of these historical documents benefits millions of genealogy enthusiasts in France, as well as MyHeritage users around the world who have French roots. Records will automatically be matched against the 81 million family trees on MyHeritage using its Record Matching technology, and users will automatically be notified of matches that can help them learn more about their family history and make new discoveries. .

The documents in these collections date back to the end of the 16the century, when priests celebrated and documented baptisms, marriages and burials. Subsequent acts in the collections date back to the period following the French Revolution, when civil status officers began registering civil status documents. Baptism / birth, marriage and death / burial records from these collections constitute the main source of French civil status records, covering all but one of the country’s departments and covering most of the French population since the 18th century. Collections in this release include:

  • Census of France in 1872, carried out in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian war and made up of 16.4 million records from 67 French departments.
  • Census of France of 1906, composed of 17.6 million records from 63 departments in France. Paris is not included in the 1872 and 1906 collections, as the census in Paris did not begin until 1926.

All collections include a high-quality index of transcribed recordings and digital images of the original documents. Among the many gems in these collections are deeds documenting the birth of Emile Zola, the death of Marcel Proust, the marriage of Jules Verne and a census record from 1872 which lists Claude Monet.

“Since acquiring Filae two months ago, we have been working closely with the Filae team to advance French genealogy,” said Gilad Japhet, Founder and CEO of MyHeritage. “Today we mark an important step in this journey by making these important collections of historical documents available on MyHeritage, so that anyone with French roots, not only in France but around the world, can learn more about it. history of his family.
