Owen “can’t believe” Lingard didn’t start
Michael Owen was shocked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side selection for Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Everton, in particular the omission of Jesse Lingard.
United had to settle for a point after Andros Townsend called off Anthony Martial’s opener and missed the opportunity to take the lead in the Premier League.
Solskjaer’s squad selection has come under scrutiny, having made five changes from the Champions League midweek win over Villarreal.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the most obvious omission, but Owen was stunned that Lingard didn’t start, especially since he only came in on Wednesday, as he told BT Sport thereafter:
“I can’t believe Jesse Lingard isn’t… I thought he would start today.
“I thought Cavani and Lingard were going to start. They had a big impact when they arrived [against Villarreal].
“I couldn’t believe it in the middle of the week when he was only six minutes old at the end of the game and still had a huge impact. Every time he steps onto Manchester United’s pitch, he shakes things up. “
