This matches the length of the new contract Solskjaer signed in July and will be seen as additional support for the manager, who oversaw a stuttering start to United’s campaign despite a big summer spend.

After the standoff with the Toffees, Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the summer acquisitions, burst into the tunnel in a move that drew criticism from former United defender Gary Neville.

“Actions like this – and Cristiano is smart enough to know that – will put real pressure on the manager, more pressure than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already under,” said the Portuguese’s Neville, who started the game from the bench.

Phelan, 59, is a highly regarded figure at the club, for which he has played. He was a longtime assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, but left after David Moyes was appointed in 2013.

He returned to help Solskjaer, initially on a temporary basis, at the end of 2018 following the departure of José Mourinho.

Solskjaer has been heavily supported since taking the post permanently in March 2019. This summer Raphael Varane (£ 41million), Jadon Sancho (£ 73million) arrived ahead of Ronaldo, with the widely held opinion that Norwegian must provide some form of substantial return on investment.
