Sergio Perez dominated the second practice session of the United States GP as Red Bull hit back at Mercedes, who surprisingly gave up their initial pace and behind McLaren’s Lando Norris at the end of an intriguing Friday.

Red Bull had been outscored by Mercedes in Austin’s opening session – behind the world champions by the best part of a second – but were much more competitive in a mixed P2 session early in the qualifying simulations.

It wasn’t championship leader Max Verstappen who led Red Bull’s charge but Perez, with his 1: 34.946 two-tenths faster than Norris in an unexpected top two – they had placed seventh and eighth earlier in the race. the day.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished third and fourth for Mercedes, three and four tenths off the pace, although the representativeness of those positions is certainly open to debate.

Hamilton and Bottas were both adrift from the catchy pace they had achieved in the supposedly slower P1, while Hamilton also reportedly passed P2, but not by much, if not for overstepping the limits of the track in the turn 19 on his fastest lap.

Hamilton also faced Verstappen in practice and the title rivals were very close to collision, a frustrating moment in a very frustrating session for the Dutchman. “Stupid idiot,” said Verstappen, who lifted his middle finger towards the seven-time world champion after being passed on the inside in Turn 1.

Verstappen then failed to complete a single quick lap on soft tires, aborting not one but two laps due to traffic. “I box. **** that, ”said Verstappen, who would finish in eighth and 0.8 seconds behind.

Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth in the other McLaren ahead of Ferrari’s Lance Stroll and Charles Leclerc, who still have hopes of beating McLaren this weekend despite a delay before a crucial qualifying day at Sky Sports F1.

Final practice takes place live at 7 p.m. before qualifying at 10 p.m., with full Sky F1 preparation starting at 8:30 p.m.
