Katie Couric shares new details about conflicted friendship with Matt Lauer
After Matt Lauer was fired from “Today” in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, his longtime colleague Katie Couric felt it was “ruthless to abandon him,” she writes in her upcoming controversial memoir, “Going There”. According to the Daily Mail, 64-year-old Katie remembers texting Matt “I’m crushed” when she learned he wasn’t coming back, despite the reasons he was asked to leave. The veteran reporter also writes that she told Matt that she loved him and that she was “there” for him in an effort to comfort him after he lost his job. “Please let me know if you want to speak. There will be better days to come, ”she recalls saying. The allegations against Matt ranged from a woman who said she exposed herself to her at work to another co-worker who accused him of sending her a sex toy. After his dismissal, other women claimed he sexually assaulted them, according to the New York Post. Katie says she had heard “whispers” about his behavior before and admits that she read “horrible things” he allegedly did. Still, she writes that she ultimately determined that Matt had been “a great professional partner, a good friend and a predator.” “Going There” will hit shelves next month.
