Kate Garraway has revealed that she had to be taken to hospital to be treated for an inflamed cornea after wearing her contact lenses for too long.

The reporter, 54, took to Instagram on Sunday to tell her followers that she was taken to Moorfields Eye Hospital after spending very long days wearing her lenses.

She posted a picture of herself lying down with a swollen eye as she reminded other caregivers that “sometimes you have to put yourself first”.

Kate cares for her husband Derek Draper, who continues to fight the ‘devastating’ effects of the long Covid, after falling ill with the coronavirus in March 2020.

Not good: The reporter took to Instagram on Sunday to tell her followers she was taken to Moorfields Eye Hospital after spending very long days wearing her lenses

Kate wrote in the caption: “Ouch! But thanks to the brilliant team @nhs @moorfieldsuae not permanent. ‘

»Inflamed cornea probably caused by wearing my contact lenses too long for very long days recently. Hence the glasses on @gmb Friday. ‘

“And to think that I almost didn’t have it checked because I wanted to go home to do physiotherapy with Derek.”

She then implored her followers who are caregivers like her to make sure they always take care of themselves.

“An added reminder if you are a caregiver, parent or someone else, sometimes you have to put yourself first or else you are of no use to anyone you are trying to help.

’48 hours of drops every hour day AND night and I’ll be back on track. Hope everyone has a nice #sunday ‘

The injury is another in a long line of issues Kate went through over the past year as her husband Derek continues to suffer from complications after having Covid-19.

He spent the last year in intensive care before returning home and is still unable to function independently.

Kate won the National Television Award for Authored Documentary last month for her work on Finding Derek, which documented her ordeal.

She revealed that there would be a sequel to the show, which offered a raw tale of the family’s journey during their hospital stay.

She told The Sun: “We’re going to do another documentary, there are plans for more.

“Derek has a very short energy window, but we’re tied. He’s been home for four months now and that was enough to get him home.

“Now we really hope we can get more and more people to see it. “
