John Bateman reveals England captain’s dream ahead of France test – .

John Bateman insists he still doesn’t know if he will have the chance to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming England captain this weekend.
England travel to Perpignan this weekend for their one and only fall 2021 international, as they take on Laurent Frayssinous’ France on Saturday afternoon. Catalans full-back Sam Tomkins was the team’s captain for the midseason clash with the United Nations All Stars, but he is unavailable this weekend due to a knee injury.

This left the door ajar for Shaun Wane to appoint a new captain, with Bateman among the main contenders alongside St Helens half-back Jonny Lomax.

The Wigan forward pointed out that he had not been told by Wane who would wear the armband, with assistant coach Paul Wellens saying the same on Tuesday morning.

But Bateman admitted it would be a proud moment if he was named his country’s captain for the first time. “He didn’t say anything – he likes to keep his cards close to his chest, doesn’t he Shaun,” Bateman said with a laugh.

“But as long as I’m playing I’m really not fussed. Although this is 100% what you dreamed of as a kid, isn’t it. It’s a dream you don’t often think will come true too But if Shaun turned around and said it would be amazing.

“That wouldn’t be bad for a boy from Bradford, would it?” But that’s one of those things, so far I’m just happy to play. I’ll see what he says, I guess. “

Bateman also admits that the chance to return to the field after a disappointing end to his first season with Wigan adds an additional personal incentive to Saturday’s trip across the Channel.

“It’s good to be back there,” he said. “It wasn’t the best year for us as a team, and I know it’s funny for people if you’re not involved with Wigan.

“But it’s great to work with Waney again after being injured last time (against the All Stars). The goal was not to lose this game, and everything is focused on the World Cup. We thought it would be this year. but these are important games for us. “
