Smereck was the victim of a racist gesture on the ice by HC Kremenchuk forward Andri Denyskin earlier in the Ukrainian Hockey League season.
Denyskin was kicked out of the game between the two teams after mocking Smereck, who is black, imitating peeling a banana and pretending to eat it.
In the aftermath of the incident, Smereck announced he would take personal leave until Denyskin was suspended and removed from the league.
Instead, the UHL granted Denyskin a 13-game suspension and a fine for racist acts.
TSN Hockey insider Chris Johnston reported that Smereck, who had spent the previous three seasons in the AHL, heard from several clubs interested in signing him.
« Jalen Smereck has a few options here in development and one of those avenues is to get back to North America, ”Johnston said in the September 30 edition of Insider Trading. “He’s from Detroit, he’s spent the last two seasons in the American Hockey League and over there. There have been several AHL teams who have reached out to their rep to see if there could be an adjustment and maybe a home for him here.
