FRANCE 24 received the prestigious French FIGRA award for a short-format documentary illustrating the hardships and hunger of the people of Maracaibo, Venezuela’s second-largest city, once known as the country’s oil capital.

The 26-minute film “We are starving: the city of Maracaibo symbolizes the collapse of Venezuela” by Roméo Langlois and Jorge Benezra of FRANCE 24, won first prize on Saturday in the short format category. The report gives a heartbreaking tale of the depth of human suffering caused by Maracaibo’s brutal descent into poverty, where even eating has become a luxury.

“Ghosts of Karachi”, a documentary depicting life in a psychiatric hospital for women in Pakistan, and which competed in the same category, won the jury’s special mention.

In total, 77 documentaries competed in the 28e edition of the one-week international FIGRA festival held in Douai in the north of France.

The documentary “On the line”, which follows the lives of three Mexican migrants deported to their countries of origin from the United States, won the long format category.
