UPDATE, 16:58: The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a female crew member, 42, died of injuries resulting from a misfire on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set in Alec Baldwin Western, Rouiller. She died after being taken by helicopter to the University of New Mexico hospital.
Another crew member, 42, remains in emergency care after being transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Hospital.

The names of the victims were not disclosed.

“The detectives are studying how [the prop firearm was used] and what type of projectile was fired, ”the sheriff’s office said in a statement Thursday. “This incident remains an active investigation. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.

Officials said the sheriff’s deputies were sent to the Rouiller set for about 1:50 p.m., following a call to 911 indicating that an individual had been shot.

Deadline has already heard from sources that a lead actor cocked a gun during a rehearsal, unaware that there were live ammunition in it, hitting two people, a man and a woman. The man was shot in the shoulder, while the woman was airlifted to hospital for stomach surgery.

A production spokesperson for Rust Movie Productions LLC told Deadline, “There was an accident today on the set in New Mexico. Rouiller involving misfires of a prop pistol with blanks. Two crew members were taken to hospital and are receiving treatment. The production is for the moment stopped. The safety of our actors and our team remains our top priority. “

The set has been locked out and an old church on the set has been blocked off, according to local press. Bonanza Creek Ranch is known for its western productions.

Rouiller stars Baldwin and was written and directed by Joel Souza. Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon, Frances Fisher and Jensen Ackles also star in the film, based on a story by Souza and Baldwin. This is not the first time that a death on the set has been caused by a blank firing gun. Actor Jon-Erik Hexum was killed on October 18, 1984, on TV Cover Up series when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a blank loaded firearm. And in 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died after being shot in the head by a blank gun on the set of The crow. Both incidents were determined to be accidents.
