FRANCE is preparing to deliberately annoy Christmas shipments to and from Britain in revenge for fishing rights, officials fear.

French captains threaten to blockade Calais from Saturday morning if negotiations on a fishing agreement fail.

Paris has set midnight Friday as a deadline and is preparing reprisals, which could be triggered next Monday.

He wants to impose additional import taxes on British goods, but he is unlikely to get the necessary support from the EU.

Instead, it could cause delays in Calais and Dover by ordering more physical checks. Other measures will include increasing electricity to Jersey and blocking British ships from French ports.

But French officials privately admit they don’t want to worsen strained relations with Britain.

It comes as a row in the EU gears up after Brexit Minister Lord Frost rejected his opening offer on Northern Ireland’s border controls.

Barnier’s assault

MICHEL Barnier has his eyes riveted on the French presidency after an explosion of support for his Eurosceptic election campaign.

The ex-Brexit negotiator is expected to win the Conservative nomination and face Emmanuel Macron next spring.

Supporters say his center-right party is in the throes of ‘Barnier mania’ and the 70-year-old could be ‘French Joe Biden’.

At a rally, Mr Barnier said: “I sincerely believe that I will win the presidential election”.

But polls predict that Mr Macron, 43, will comfortably win a second term.
