FDA to review COVID vaccine for 5-11 year olds this week – .

ORANGE COUNTY, Florida – The Food and Drug Administration’s Vaccine Advisory Board is expected to meet this week to consider whether to provide emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children from 5 to 11 years old.

What would you like to know

  • FDA Should Consider COVID-19 Vaccine For 5-11 Year Olds
  • If the Pfizer vaccine is approved by the advisory committee, it will go to the CDC
  • CC Advisory Board meetings are scheduled for November 2-3
  • Once the vaccine is cleared for emergency use, it could be available immediately

The dosage for children is said to be lower than for adults and adolescents. The Pfizer vaccine for anyone 12 years of age and over is a dose of 30 micrograms. The suggested dosage for the younger age group is 10 micrograms.

Pfizer data shows vaccine effectiveness for 5-11 year olds is around 90.7%

About 28 million children in the United States would qualify in this age group.

When the White House unveiled its plan to roll out childhood immunizations last week, President Joe Biden said there would be enough vaccines for all eligible children.

This proposal also includes making the vaccine and education about it easy and accessible for families.

A pediatrician said the biggest hurdle might be convincing parents.

He stressed that the vaccine is safe for their children and that they should research it for them.

“Since the safety profile is almost identical to that of adults, there is no reason to believe that this vaccine should not be as useful in children as it is in adults,” says disease expert pediatric infectious diseases, Dr Michael Muszynski.

If the FDA’s Vaccine Advisory Board approves the proposal, it is then referred to an independent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory committee for review for official recommendation.

These meetings are scheduled for November 2-3.

After the signing of the CDC director, children could start getting immunized immediately.
