Everton director of football Marcel Brands has confirmed the Toffees tried to sign Donny van de Beek over the summer – and declined to rule out a January transfer for the Manchester United outcast.

Netherlands international Van de Beek has struggled at Old Trafford since joining the Premier League giants in a £ 40million transfer from Ajax in the summer of 2020.

The 24-year-old has yet to start a league game this season and cut a frustrated figure after being left on the bench during Manchester United’s Champions League clash against Villarreal last week.

After that match, reports claimed that Van de Beek would look to leave Old Trafford in January and that Everton could be a possible destination for the Dutchman.

Everton boss Brands admits he tried to sign his compatriot over the summer and hinted the Toffees could rekindle their interest in the player in January.

“We had it on our list,” Brands told NOS. “At the start of the transfer window, we inquired at Manchester United, then it was impossible.

“At the end of the window, I got a call from Guido Albers, his agent, to finally hire him. But at the last minute it was canceled. Arrested again.

When asked if a January move for Van de Beek could be considered, Brands added: “It always depends on a club’s willingness to cooperate.

“And it’s early October, so much can still happen with injuries. Manchester United are playing on multiple fronts, it’s hard to say now.

‘Of course it’s a shame for Donny. He’s a very good player, there’s no doubt about it. Such a boy wants to play and wants to come back to the Dutch national team.

“But you know that in a club like this the pressure is great and the competition is enormous. When you see what United had on the bench: Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Paul Pogba.
