In June, FromSoftware featured the first Elden Ring footage since its announcement two years ago.

The trailer debuted during Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live, where it was confirmed that the title will release on January 21, 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, and PC.

Elden Ring is set in a world called Lands Between, which was created in collaboration with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, who was tasked with creating the lore of the game.

Players are free to customize their character using a character creator similar to that of the Dark Souls series.

Regardless of their appearance and attributes chosen, they will assume the role of one of the many tarnished individuals, whose ancestors were exiled from the Between Lands many years ago.

But when the Ring of Elden is broken, they have the chance to return and conquer the land from which they were banished.

The Lands Between is mostly made up of six large areas ruled by demigods, characters also written by Martin, who are the main bosses in the game and don’t have to be tackled in a set order. Elden Ring supports fast travel and will also include an accessible hub area midway through the game.

Martin said in an interview in June that his work on the game had been done for years.

“My work on it was done years ago,” Martin explained. “These games are like movies, they take a long time to develop.

“Basically they wanted a created world to set the game up. Worldbuilding is a big factor in fantasy and science fiction. You’re not just talking about the characters and the plot, but the setting is almost as important as everything else: Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age, Isaac Asimov’s founding universe.

“I put together a pretty detailed history for them and then they took it from there. So really, it had been several years since I last saw them, but they would periodically come to show me monsters they had designed or the latest special effects, or [other] interesting things.

“The game has grown slowly and now it’s coming out in January, I believe, so I’ll be as excited as anyone else to see it. “
