One of them is the Côtes du Roussillon 2018 “Bastide Miraflors” from Domaine Lafage. This delicious red wine is a blend of Syrah (70%) and Grenache from old vines (30%), two of the region’s main red grape varieties. The grapes are grown organically by Jean-Marc Lafage on schist, granite and alluvial gravel soils on vines over 50 years old.

The wine shows concentrated fruit but is not heavy, although the alcohol weighs at 14.5%. Notes of raspberry, violet and blueberry are accentuated by notes of black liquorice and minerals. The influence of oak is contained; 75 percent of the wine is aged in concrete vats, the rest in larger oak barrels. With its fruity character, it can be drunk wonderfully now.
It’s a versatile red wine that will pair well with everything from grilled meats and duck breasts to roast chicken and veggie risottos. At $ 16, it overlooks complexity and showcases the quality of Roussillon wines at unbeatable prices.
Domaine Lafage is a large mosaic of wine-growing sites covering around 400 hectares in different terroirs of Roussillon. The Lafage family has been growing grapes and making wine there since 1791. For most of this history, the grapes were sold to local cooperatives for wine production. Jean-Marc Lafage was the first to break with this model and to produce his own wines.
Sa Bastide Miraflors is an excellent introduction to the region and to the wines of Domaine Lafage.
