Cute alert! First seal pups of the season spotted on Norfolk beach

The first seal pups of the year made an early appearance at Horsey Beach, Norfolk, marking the start of calving season.

The mammal calving season generally runs from November to January.

This early detection coincides with an estimate by the Friends of Horsey Seals seal protection charity that this year’s tally may be higher than in previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions disrupting the tally.

Seal protection volunteers advised the public to admire the puppies from a safe distance

Jane Bowden, director and administrator of the charity, explained, “We suspended counting when COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible for our counters, so we don’t have a full figure this year. “

Last season saw more than 2,000 gray seal births at Horsey Beach in January 2021.

Volunteers watched over the new fluffy faces, keeping them safe and making sure visitors didn’t get too close.
