That will all change for Doctor Who in the coming months as Russell T Davies has been named Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary showrunner in 2023 and beyond, replacing current boss Chris Chibnall.
Chibnall will be stepping out alongside the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, and while we wait to see who the next Time Lord will be, Chibnall has had a chat with the press, including RadioTimes.com, ahead of Series 13. As you might expect, the The subject of his departure was brought up and it turned out that he stayed longer than he thought.
“It took longer than expected if we’re being honest. I’ve been throwing batons at people for about a year now. And finally, someone picked it up, ”Chibnall said of his search for his replacement.
“We had this conversation from the start, and I hope you can see that the atmosphere is so team-oriented and so positive, it’s a proper family atmosphere. This cast and crew are so close – you wouldn’t want to do it with other people, because it’s just their own low-key little show. And then the next version will be his own low-key show, just like Peter [Capaldi]the time was, and Matt [Smith]the time was, and David [Tennant]it was.
While the cloister bell may be ringing on his time in charge, Chibnall insists he only has fond memories of his time on Doctor Who.
“You couldn’t appreciate it more than we appreciated it. It was such a laugh and such a privilege, ”he said. “And I think we’ve been paying close attention to the present moment on purpose. Obviously I knew Russell and Steven [Moffat] for a long time and part of their advice was just, “Take advantage of it while you do it, because afterwards you really miss it.” “
“We definitely approached it like that. I don’t feel any sadness as the end approaches. It’s just, “We walked in and did what we planned to do. And I feel like there was an amazing atmosphere while we were doing it. So it really feels good. And frankly, I’m going to be able to see my family again, which would be really nice.
Series 13, titled Doctor Who: Flux is set to begin its six-episode run on Halloween with more specials planned for the current team, bringing the show through to the regeneration and return of RTD in 2023.
