Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo will be encouraged that Chelsea will likely be without Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva at the back due to fitness issues. Better news for Thomas Tuchel, Reece James and N’Golo Kante should be back from injury.
Brentford have a very commendable 12 points in their first seven games, comfortably the best of the three promoted teams. Thomas Frank’s side didn’t give much – only Liverpool, Chelsea, Brighton and Manchester City conceded fewer shots on target. They didn’t do it by sitting down deep and barricading their penalty area. Brentford chooses his moments to press high, plays a mix of long and short passes from behind, and looks to maximize set pieces with smart routines.
Chelsea were a bit discolored in the four games between the international breaks in September and October, but still started the weekend leading the league. Mason Mount is back in the squad and Tuchel hopes it will help them regain their offensive ease.
Tuchel believes that the best talent in football is simply playing too many matches, but also revealed that elite managers feel they may have little influence to effect change.
“We knew in advance when Thiago would be back and when he would travel, so that’s nothing new,” Tuchel said.
“He will be back this afternoon, hopefully safe and sound, Thiago from this match in Brazil.
“So we had our talk today over Brentford, we had our tactical training today, and he missed it all.
“He’s played 90 minutes, he’s got 12 hours of travel, so maybe that’s the answer about his availability – he’s not.
“I got used to a lot of things in the national breakaways, it’s like that today.
“Are we satisfied, all the coaches with the number of games our players play for their country?” No, we are not. Does anyone ask us if we want to change something? And no. So this is nothing new. “
Full team news on the way soon.
