He was rehearsing Thursday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, when he fell dozens of feet to the ground after being crushed between two cars in the air, according to multiple reports.
The stunt was supposed to see the Escapologist break free and fall under the vehicles before they collided.
The 41-year-old was “responsive” and “immediately taken to hospital where he continues to receive medical treatment,” a spokesperson for AGT: Extreme said in a statement to People magazine.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as we await further updates on his condition,” the representative added.
A statement from the Henry County Sheriff’s Department said Jonathan was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“He suffered serious leg injuries and several lacerations, and was airlifted to Grady hospital,” the statement said.
“He was transported in serious condition, but is currently alive, alert and in good health.
“There are no plans for a criminal investigation at the moment and any further investigation would be carried out by AGT. “
NBC has promoted AGT: Extreme, an eight-episode spin-off of its hit series America’s Got Talent, as a showcase of “the most outrageous, unique, and mind-boggling acts of enormous scale and magnitude that cannot just not be confined to a theater stage.
Production on the show, which is slated to air in 2022, has been suspended following the crash.
Earlier this week, Jonathan sparked engagement rumors after he and his girlfriend, Sherlock star Amanda Abbington, went official on Instagram after nine months of dating.
