Blue Origin a de gros plans for its own space station, a project called Orbital Reef which would be “Mixed-use business park” and the “first commercial destination in low earth orbit”. Kind of like a cruise ship that can accommodate 10 people and does not travel to multiple destinations. It will be a little smaller than the International Space Station, Blue Origin dit, and would be open for business between 2025 and 2030.

Ten people. That’s still higher than eight people, the total number of people Blue Origin carried just past the minimum threshold of space before turning back after about a minute. It is also much less than 1 trillion people, the number Jeff Bezos anticipates will eventually live in huge space colonies that it is described like the out-of-world structure in Interstellar.

To achieve this, Blue Origin is partnering with various companies, mainly Sierra Space, a habitat spatial company that will provide the large integrated flexible environment module (VIE), the human living quarters with three floors, beds, a kitchen and an astro garden, as well as aplane to transport passengers and cargo to and from Earth. Blue Origin would take care of the launch system, utility systems and base modules. Other parts are at be supplied by Boeing, Redwire Space and Genesis Engineering Solutions. Arizona State University will be lead a “global consortium” of more than 12 academic institutions, to provide advice on research and education.

Vaguely wording Press release is an advertisement for luxury tourism, promising “human-centered space architecture with world-class services and amenities that are inspiring, practical and safe”. There will, according to Brent Sherwood, senior vice prChair advanced development programs for Blue Origin, “a vibrant business ecosystem” that will generate “new discoveries, new products, new entertainment and global awareness”.

In an email, Blue Origin declined to specify what Approvals or “new entertainment” imply. But a spokesperson for Sierra Space said, “We are creating a mixed-use business park. This means that we are opening up the space sector to new tenants and participants, creating a dynamic economy in space with new people living and working in space. Target customers would include “manufacturing, space tourism, pharmaceuticals and any business that can see the benefits of being weightless,” the spokesperson said.

They said it remained to be seen whether researchers would get lower fares for the tickets.

So, it’s okay to ignore it until it’s big enough that we can’t. For now, here’s a cool rendering:
