British Columbia Minister of Health, Northern Health Provincial Health Officer and Chief Medical Officer of Health provide update on COVID-19 situation in northern British Columbia at 3:15 p.m. today.
Adrian Dix, Dr Bonnie Henry and Dr Jong Kim hold unscheduled briefing as data from BC Center for Disease Control shows northern British Columbia has four times the rate of new COVID-19 cases compared to other regions and hospitalizations more than double the provincial average.

During a COVID-19 briefing on Tuesday, Dix said the province had to transfer 55 intensive care patients to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island from Northern Health hospitals.

Forty-three of 55 patients tested positive for COVID, he said, and 42 were not fully immunized. Dix said 14 of the transfers took place over Thanksgiving weekend and the province had to contract two private planes to facilitate them.

“The situation (…) is extremely serious”, he declared. ” Our team [in northern hospitals] do a simply epic job. “

Thursday’s unscheduled COVID-19 update comes after Dr Bonnie Henry said she plans to place additional restrictions on communities in northern British Columbia where COVID-19 is spreading, in a bid to reduce pressure on health workers in the region.
