Edinburgh, October 22, 2021. – NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) undergoes final checks after successful arrival at the launch center in Kourou French Guiana.

isits launch is scheduled for 18e December 2021, on an Ariane 5 rocket.

Operational preparations for the world’s largest and most complex space science observatory will take a total of two months. Webb will then be set up for flight, loaded with thrusters, and mounted to the top of the rocket. Due to its size, the spacecraft must be folded to fit the rocket shroud.

Once operational, Webb will be able to look back “over 13 billion years into the light created just after the Big Bang,” NASA said. The observatory will also help look for signs of habitable exoplanets.

The launch of JWST has been delayed three times so far. First, its planned launch date was moved from May 2020 to March 2021. It was later changed to 31.st October 2021, in part because of the coronavirus pandemic. A few months ago the launch date was again changed to 18e December 2021 as preparations for the launch clash with those of the French army.
