LONDON – Months of data from the UK’s inoculation program have shed new light on the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.
The situation looks bad again in Britain, but a closer look reveals it could be much worse without the vaccines.

The latest government figures show hospitalizations are on the rise. In the week ending October 17, 6,315 people were admitted to hospital with Covid-19 – a 15% increase from the previous week.

But of those admitted to hospital between September 13 and October 10, the vast majority were not vaccinated. Hospitalization rates were more than twice as high among unvaccinated people in all age groups, compared to those who received two doses of a vaccine.

The graph below also shows that the link between cases and admissions has become much more detached since the start of the pandemic.

Deaths from the virus are also on the rise in the UK In the seven days ending October 21, 912 people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid, up 10% from the previous week.

The risk of dying from Covid was also much higher among the unvaccinated population, according to official data on the spread of the virus in England.

For every 100,000 unvaccinated people aged 60 to 69 in England, 20 have died after contracting the virus. Among those vaccinated in the same age group, that number fell to 4 per 100,000. Among those aged 70 to 79, 47 out of 100,000 unvaccinated people died after catching Covid, and among those over 80 years old, the death rate among the unvaccinated was 128 per 100,000.

In people between the ages of 18 and 40, 48 deaths from the virus have been recorded. Of these, 34 – or 71% – were not vaccinated.

The graph below also shows a decoupling between cases and deaths, from the peak in January.

Over the summer, as the weather warmed up and vaccinations took off, deaths and hospitalizations from Covid dropped dramatically in the UK. .

To date, 86% of people over 12 have been vaccinated against Covid, of which 79% have received two doses. In England, more than 4.2 million people to date have also received a booster injection, with evidence showing that the effects of an injection wear off over time.

Despite government assurances that there is a high level of immunity among the population, doctors are warning the UK is entering a crisis. There are also concerns about a new mutation of the delta variant circulating in the country, which is under investigation by UK health authorities.

The government has rejected calls for the immediate reintroduction of certain restrictions, such as mask warrants, which have been criticized as “willful neglect” by the British Medical Association.

UK Health Minister Sajid Javid warned on Wednesday that Covid cases could reach 100,000 a day before winter.
