2 foreigners killed in shooting in Mexico’s Tulum resort – .

MEXICO CITY – Two foreigners were killed and three injured in a shooting at a restaurant in the Mexican Caribbean resort of Tulum, authorities said Thursday.
Authorities said one of the women who died was from Germany and the other was from India. The three injured included two Germans and a Dutch tourist.

The shooting erupted Wednesday night at a street side restaurant that has outdoor tables, just off the main drag in Tulum.

The brawl pitted two groups that sell drugs at street level in the area, the Quintana Roo state attorney’s office said in a statement. The tourists were apparently dining at the restaurant and may have been caught in the crossfire.

One woman died at the scene and the other in hospital. One of the attackers, also injured, was subsequently arrested. There was no immediate word on the condition of the injured tourists.

Tulum has seen increasing difficulties in transitioning from a laid-back seaside retreat to a major international destination. He had long been spared the violence sporadically observed in the large cities of Cancun and Playa del Carmen further up the coast.

But in June, two men were shot dead on Tulum beach and a third was injured.

The administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has placed its hopes on Tulum, where it has announced its intention to build an international airport and a stop for the Maya train, which will cycle around the Yucatan peninsula.

But the state of Quintana Roo, home to resorts like Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun, is beset by both violence and corruption.

In 2019, authorities said a dispute over street drug trafficking was also the apparent motive for a bar shooting that left seven people dead in the nearby resort of Playa del Carmen.

In a scene similar to the Tulum attack, two men armed with .38 caliber pistols broke into a nightclub in the 2019 attack and opened fire on their rivals.

Several drug cartels operate in the state, which is known for a lucrative retail drug market and as a disembarkation point for drug shipments.
