Volvo takes Tesla’s ‘vegan leather’ stance for cruelty-free interiors – .

Volvo Cars has announced that it will take an ethical stance for animal welfare in its electric vehicles. On September 23, the Swedish automaker officially announced that every new all-electric Volvo model will feature a fully leather-free interior, starting with the C40 Recharge.

By 2030, when Volvo’s entire fleet switches to electric-only powertrains, every vehicle the automaker builds will be fitted with leather-free interiors for durability and animal welfare. At present, Volvo claims that it “is actively working to find high quality and sustainable sources for many materials currently in use in the wider automotive industry”. He has yet to find a supplier to manage his vegan interiors.

By 2025, Volvo says it aims for a quarter of the materials found in new vehicles to be recycled and bio-based content. It’s part of the automaker’s plan to become a fully circular business by 2040. Additionally, the company says its climate action plans will allow Volvo to “target all of its immediate suppliers, including suppliers. of materials, to use 100% renewable energy. by 2025.

Its primary focus for the transition to cruelty-free interiors was based on the company’s concern about the negative environmental impacts of cattle ranching and deforestation. “Cattle are estimated to be responsible for around 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, the majority coming from cattle ranching,” Volvo said in a press release. It will no longer offer leather interior options and Volvo will offer customers comparable alternatives such as high-quality, sustainable materials made from organic and recycled sources.

“Being a progressive automaker means we have to tackle all areas of sustainability, not just CO2 emissions, ”said Stuart Templar, director of global sustainability at Volvo Cars. “Responsible sourcing is an important part of this work, including respect for animal welfare. The absence of leather inside our pure electric cars is a good next step towards solving this problem. “

Volvo will also look to reduce the use of plastics, rubber, lubricants and adhesives to further subtract its footprint that requires handling livestock. “The company is taking this step because it believes that while the absence of leather is a step in the right direction, taking it alone does not make a car interior vegan,” the company added.

Volvo is effectively following in the footsteps of automakers like Tesla, which adopted vegan interiors in mid-2017. CEO Elon Musk confirmed in 2016 that Tesla will switch to pet-free interiors, making the company’s vehicles more sustainable than before.
