TORONTO – Nearly three dozen cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in a Scarborough prison, prompting Toronto public health to declare an epidemic.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General confirmed to CTV Toronto on Thursday that there were 34 active inmate cases at the Toronto East Detention Center located near Warden Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East.

The ministry did not provide further details on the epidemic, but a spokesperson said in a statement that “each facility has put in place its own pandemic plan prepared in consultation with local health partners. public ”.

According to provincial data, the correctional facility began reporting new cases the week of September 12 with four confirmed infections. The epidemic rose to 17 cases last week.

And on Monday, another 17 inmates were confirmed to have COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the facility to 34.

Prior to the outbreak, there had been 43 inmate cases at the East Toronto Detention Center since May 2020.

On Monday, two other correctional facilities in the province, the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Center and the Toronto South Detention Center, confirmed cases of COVID-19 with one each.
