Toney passes Van Dijk test and contemplates Liverpool ‘dream’
For the first time in the Premier League this season, Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool looked vulnerable in defense.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had conceded just one goal in five league appearances heading into Saturday’s game with Brentford, but were raped three times by the Bees on a night to be forgotten for the Reds.
Van Dijk has barely had to sweat in any of Liverpool’s games this season, although the Dutchman has not played in the usual confident manner and has been exploited on more than one occasion.
Ivan Toney was the man who made life difficult for the 30-year-old as his physical strength and ability to perform dangerous runs proved problematic for Klopp’s side.
You wouldn’t know this was Toney’s first season at the top of English football based on his performances, highlighting much of Brentford’s inspired transfer bet on the former Peterborough United striker.
Looking ahead to his first Premier League campaign in July, Toney admitted Van Dijk was the best defender he’s likely to face all season – a challenge he certainly took on on Saturday.
