Sotheby’s to launch “long overdue” wine auctions in France – .

The international auction house Sotheby’s adds France as a new place of wine and spirits auction this fall, which it wants to make an international hub for its sales of wines and spirits.
The company, which will conduct sales from new locations in Beaune and Bordeaux, has appointed Amayès Aouli to the new position of auction manager for Continental Europe, which will focus on manufacturing in France. Aouli joins the company from JPMorgan Asset Management France, where he was Executive Director and Marketing Manager.

Jasper Morris MW also joins the team as a consultant for the sale of Hospices de Beaune. Morris was one of the founders of specialty wine importers Morris & Verdin, which were purchased by Berry Bros and Rudd in 2003. Morris retired from BBR in 2017 and started his own business Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy in September 2018. He also acted as Senior Consultant for rival auction house Christie’s in charge of the annual Hospices de Beaune wine sale.

The move comes after the company’s wines and spirits division achieved exceptional auction results in the first half of 2021, with a combined total of $ 58 million from sales in New York, London and Hong Kong.

Jamie Ritchie, global head of Sotheby’s Wine, said the addition of regular wine and spirits sales in France – based in Beaune and Bordeaux – was a key initiative for the company and long overdue.

“We anticipate that France will become one of our most important markets, offering sellers from continental Europe the best access to the global market, and buyers around the world will have more opportunities to purchase rare bottles,” he said. he declared.

At present, more than 85% of the value of wines sold by Sotheby’s come from France, so the decision was “late”, he added.

“We believe that it is important to have the property of these auctions located in Beaune and Bordeaux, the two most important wine trading centers in Europe, in order to be able to offer collectors a full range of services”, he declared.

He said that Aouli’s strong business background and experience in developing business and building long-lasting relationships were the right skills to grow his business in Europe, while the “incredibly deep knowledge of the whole region” of Morris and his special relationship with the Hospices de Beaune team led by Ludivine Griveau would give a good overview of each vintage.

Mario Tavella, President of Sotheby’s France and President of Sotheby’s Europe added that for more than fifty years Sotheby’s had offered premium production, first in London, then in New York and then in Hong Kong – and our expansion in sales in France. was not only long overdue, but “an endorsement of the strength of the world market”.
