Three and a half months since the Canadiens played the last game of the 2020-21 season, they are preparing to start another campaign. This one could be very different, with several key starts from the team that reached the Stanley Cup Final.

The largest turnover was recorded in the center, which raised Nick Suzuki to the first place in the order. His line with Tyler Toffoli on the left and Calder Trophy prospect Cole Caufield on the right will be the main target for all Habs opponents this year.

That turnover also means a legitimate shot for Ryan Poehling to break through the opening night roster after a very strong AHL season. He will have the chance to create a certain chemistry with Artturi Lehkonen on the second line of tonight.

Defensively, we’ll see how Alexander Romanov fares with Montreal’s best defender, Jeff Petry, while Joel Edmundson tends to get injured, and we’ll also see promising prospect Gianni Fairbrother alongside Brett Kulak.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won’t send many of their best players to the ice tonight, but they will see John Tavares’ first game since his first-round series injury against Montreal. He will play with new addition Josh Ho-Sang, who is hoping to finally land a berth in the NHL.

The most dangerous line could turn out to be that of Nick Robertson, Michael Amadio and William Nylander, with two attacking wingers. Nylander, of course, was the star of the Leafs roster in that playoff series, doing his best to lead the club to a rare first-round victory.

The outcome of the game doesn’t matter, but for many players, it’s one of two or three chances to show they deserve a place on the NHL team. These are the players who could shine the most in the first competitive action of the 2021-22 season.
