Nottingham Forest sacks Chris Hughton and targets Steve Cooper as replacement

Steve Cooper is the main candidate to replace Chris Hughton at the Nottingham Forest post after the latter’s sacking on Thursday.

The former Swansea head coach fits the profile Forest is looking for due to his track record of working with and improving young players at Swansea and working with age group teams at the Football Association. Cooper took Swansea to the Championship play-off final last season before leaving the club in the summer.

Hughton was sacked after Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough, a result that leaves Forest at the bottom of the table with just one point in their first seven matches, although the search for his replacement was underway ahead of the setback.

Cooper isn’t the only candidate to be considered for the role. Chris Wilder’s representative has reportedly reached out to Forest to express his interest in the job in recent months, but the club don’t see the former Sheffield United manager as a viable option.

Steven Reid will take interim charge of Forest’s first team until a permanent replacement is appointed. He will be the 21st person to lead the team in the past decade.

In a statement, Forest said, “The club would like to express appreciation for Chris’s efforts. Chris has joined the club at a difficult time for everyone in football and the world and we thank him for the way he has performed during his tenure.
