After a busy summer at the top of the Premier League, the title race, in the eyes of many, is the most open it has been in recent years, with players like Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and City all strengthening his squads.
The deals Chelsea and United conducted were arguably the most eye-catching, with Londoners landing Romelu Lukaku and United bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club.
Chelsea currently lead the Premier League table in goal difference ahead of Liverpool and United, with City three points behind them. Nonetheless, McManaman believes City still have the advantage over Chelsea due to the standard they have set in recent seasons.
“At the start of the season I thought Liverpool were the favorites for the Premier League title this year,” McManaman told HorseRacing.net.
“If everyone stays fit and well then Liverpool, along with Manchester City, will be the favorites as they have set the standard over the past few seasons
“Chelsea have improved their starting XI by signing Romelu Lukaku and his signing can take them to the next level. The way they’ve played, especially how hard they’ve made themselves to break and beat means they’re going to do it a lot better than they did last season.
“However, they are going to have a hard time getting ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City. Both of these teams have been doing this consistently over the past couple of years, while I haven’t seen Chelsea be at this level in quite a while.
“They will face Manchester City this Saturday, it will be a great game and give everyone the opportunity to see if Chelsea are really good enough to compete with Liverpool and City. “
