EXPLANATION: Background check is no longer required for Tennessee gun owners

Tennessee became the latest state to allow most adults 21 and older to carry handguns without first completing a background check and training after Governor Bill Lee enacted the measure in April.
“I signed the constitutional deferral today because it shouldn’t be difficult for law-abiding Tennesseans to exercise their rights (Second Amendment),” said Lee, a Republican as his campaign approaches. re-election for 2022, in a tweet.
Lee originally proposed legislation backed by the National Rifle Association last year before the COVID-19 pandemic forced lawmakers to restrict their attention. He renewed that effort when lawmakers returned for this year’s legislative session, where the GOP-controlled General Assembly easily brought the measure to its desk.
The measure applies to firearms that are concealed and those that are carried openly.
Nationally, at least six states are also considering similar measures this year, with supporters eager to join nearly 20 others who currently do not need permits for concealed transport. Meanwhile, more than 30 states allow open porting without a license.
When asked if he had been concerned about the recent mass shootings in Georgia, Colorado and others, Lee had previously said that the increase in sentences meant that “we would actually strengthen the laws that would help prevent gun crimes in the future ”. Associated Press.
