After almost two years of absence, The witcher Season 2 is upon us – and with new footage to prove it. At the Tudum fan event on Saturday, Netflix released a trailer that … was more of a sizzling reel of Season 1 with a few clues as to what was to come. The Promise: Bigger roles for Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer and Freya Allan’s Ciri, and Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia giving more monster kicks.
The witcher, based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski (not the CD game Projekt Red, itself an adaptation), previously told the multi-faceted story of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri as they crossed the continent in search of their fate – or a few coins. The stories converged into a time-looped Season 1, leaving Season 2 to be a simpler adaptation of Sapkowski Witcher’s debut novel, Blood of the Elves. A behind-the-scenes video released in April confirmed the direction, with a subsequent trailer suggesting it might finally be time for Ciri to begin her witcher training.
During Tudum, Netflix also created two key Season 2 clips, both involving Geralt. In the first, the witcher chats with a monster buddy about what to really say to Ciri:
The second finds Geralt in pure sorcerer mode, drinking from the elixir and preparing for battle.
Witcher’s main show is just the tip of the iceberg of what Netflix has in store for its burgeoning mega-franchise. In August, the streamer premiered The Witcher: The Wolf’s Nightmare, the first of what animation company Studio Mir is hoping will be many prequel stories being told in the universe. 2022 will see the arrival of The Witcher: Origin of Blood, a mini-series centered on the Conjunction of the Spheres, an event that shaped the Continent in the world that Geralt knows. The witcher Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who recently signed a deal with Netflix to create even more series for the streamer, will oversee all productions. But the flagship series is everything – and it’s coming.
The witcher Season 2 premieres on Netflix on December 17th. And good news, an undated Season 3 was also officially announced during the event.
