Former rapper Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, 31, put on six stones after fleeing Islamic State and his ears had to be used to identify him by police in Spain where he was arrested
Former rapper Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, 31, gained so much weight during his escape that the Spanish police had to use his ears to identify him.
The Londoner had fought in Syria with the Islamic State and was mistaken for his chief decapitator Jihadi John.
He fled Syria for Algeria and was later arrested in 2020 with two assistants after taking delivery of kebab orders.
Detectives identified alleged Algerian fixer and smuggler Adbeizerrak Seddiki as the man who ordered kebabs online through a social media post.
They monitored the address in Almeria, in southeastern Spain, before pouncing on Abdel Bary as the suspected terror team took a third kebab delivery.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Seddiki placed a take-out order on April 15, 2020 at 10:46 p.m. local time, five days before the arrest, at a location identified as The Kebab Shop.
The second was made from Makro Doner at 10 p.m. the following night. The third delivery of Uber Eats, at 2:48 pm on April 18, led the police to spot Siddiki on a balcony and to identify Abdel Bary “by his ears”.
A Spanish judge authorized a search of the apartment, leading to the arrest of Abdel Bary, Siddiki and a third Algerian named Kossaila Chollouah.
They also seized £ 43,000 worth of bitcoin and other evidence.
Abdel Bary remains in Soto del Real prison near Madrid. He was not charged but investigators suspect he was planning a terrorist attack.
Bary is the son of Adel Abdel Bari who confessed to murdering more than 200 people in bombings in Africa.
His parents brought Bary to London from Egypt when he was six.
Before his departure for Syria in 2013, some of his rap music was broadcast on Radio 1.
