After months of secret revelations and exclusive theatrical premieres, the trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film Licorice Pizza is finally live, and full of all the wonderful vibes we were hoping for. Licorice Pizza stars Cooper Hoffman, son of frequent PTA collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman, with Alana Haim (of the Haim Band), Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits and Uncut gems co-director Benny Safdie. Licorice Pizza is slated for a theatrical release on November 26.
Like most of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films, Licorice Pizza seems to be concerned not so much with a specific plot as with the vibrations of a moment, a place and a feeling. This time it’s about young loves and growing up. The film will follow Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) as he meets his first love Alana Kane (Alana Haim), and they explore the San Fernando Valley from 1973. The star of the trailer, however, could be Cooper, who suggests playing Jon Peters, a longtime hairstylist and Hollywood character – who really wants you to know he’s dating Barbra Streisand.
To really bring the feelings of the early ’70s home, the entire trailer is highlighted with “Life on Mars?” By David Bowie. which makes it both fun and melancholy. Although this is a good sign for the soundtrack of Licorice PizzaRadiohead’s Johnny Greenwood is also slated to compose the score for the film, following his work on Anderson’s last four films.
Like most of the internet’s most beloved directors, Anderson is a strong advocate of the theatrical experience, which is part of the reason he only gave the trailer out for Licorice Pizza in a few specific theaters in certain cities ahead of its online release Monday. Since he’s gone to so much trouble for the trailer, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Licorice Pizza will only be available in theaters when it premieres in November.
