The two discussed a range of issues, including Brexit and its impact on Northern Ireland. Under Mr Johnson’s Brexit deal, some controls are now taking place on trade between Northern Ireland and Britain.

This infuriated trade unionists who demand that the “Northern Ireland Protocol” be abolished.
However, senior Democrats, including President Joe Biden, have urged the government not to do anything that could undermine the peace process.

In a statement, Ms Pelosi said: ‘Respectful of the will of the British people and of Brexit, I reiterated the strong bipartisan support that the Good Friday agreements continue to enjoy in the United States Congress and our hope that the negotiations in progress will give a positive result which recognizes this historic agreement.

“I had the honor of personally inviting the Prime Minister to a bipartisan leadership meeting at the United States Capitol when he visits the United States later this month. “

He said: “The Prime Minister has raised the issue of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

“He underlined the UK’s concerns about the way the Protocol is being implemented and the impact it is having on the people of Northern Ireland.

“The Prime Minister and President Pelosi both agreed on the importance of preserving the peace in Northern Ireland. “

Lord Frost, Britain’s chief Brexit negotiator, has warned Brussels that the UK could abandon the protocol unless it shows more flexibility.

It was introduced to prevent a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, which could have undermined the 1998 peace agreement.

Ms Pelosi’s statement also said she had discussed the coronavirus, the upcoming UN climate summit COP-26 in Glasgow and the new ‘AUKUS’ alliance.

She said: ‘During our meeting, Prime Minister Johnson and I discussed common priorities, including tackling the climate crisis and tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
