MOSCOW – An armed man opened fire on a Russian university campus on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring 19, state media reported.
During the attack, students jumped from a second-story window to escape from a building on the campus of Perm State University in the city of Perm, about 650 km to east of Moscow, according to video footage posted online. A state news agency, RIA Novosti, quoted the Investigative Committee, a law enforcement body, as saying eight people had died.
There have been conflicting reports on whether the shooter was killed or captured, and there were no initial reports of the involvement of other gunmen. RIA posted videos showing a slim man dressed in black clothes, a black helmet and carrying a gun, possibly a rifle.
Once rare, school shootings have become more common in Russia in recent years. Monday’s violence was the second mass school shooting this year. In May, an assailant killed seven students and two school employees in Kazan, another provincial city of Russia.
