A couple who erected a fence to protect themselves from stray fish and chip eaters were shot with an air pistol as the row grew increasingly ugly.

Stephen Williams, 57, and his wife Christine, 50, said a man appeared next to their home in Alnwick, Northumberland, and “pointed a gun at them” on Thursday.

He shot and hit a wall, according to the couple. Police said they arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the incident.

Just a day after the shooting, city workers showed up at the house, which is a former candy store, and pulled down the fence because it was blocking a sidewalk.

The argument started when the couple took matters into their own hands after months of complaining about the chippie’s customers next door hanging out on their property.

During the Covid lockdown, the lines had grown to the door due to social distancing and people were hanging out outside the house and looking out the windows.

The couple say the fence was built on land they own, but this is disputed and partially blocks a parking area and forces people to walk on the road.

Advisors say the barrier was erected prematurely before agents resolved legal issues regarding the property.

An enraged Christine said she and her husband were planning to “put the fence back in place,” MailOnline reports.

Speaking about the attack, she said: “It all traumatized me. On Thursday, after we both got home from work, my husband went out to work on the fence and I was sitting in a chair in the front, keeping him company with our dog.

“Suddenly I saw a man across the road with a gun pointed directly at me. I yelled at Stephen who pulled me away the moment the shot was fired.

“Then we heard cheers coming from the chip shop. It was terrifying. I am really shaken by all of this. We had forensic examinations here until the early hours of the morning.

Stephen and Christine decided to turn their old store into a home when they closed it and changed careers in 2019.

They say they have proof that their property line “extends from the front of the store to the sidewalk” after blocking a broadband company from digging the road in 2017.

Christine added: “They were not allowed to remove the fence and my husband will put it back because we have the right to mark our limit. “

A Northumberland Police spokesperson confirmed the incident with the air pistol.

They said: “Shortly before 6:50 pm yesterday, police received a report of safety concern following a disruption on Victoria Crescent in Alnwick.

“It was reported that two parties were involved in a dispute, in which an air gun was fired against a wall.

“No one was injured, but as a precaution, officers from the Force’s Firearms Support Unit (FSU) attended the scene.

“A 34-year-old man has been arrested and remains in detention for the time being, helping with investigations.

“There is no threat to the general public at the moment and it is believed that everyone involved knows each other.

“Officers remain in the area today to conduct patrols so that anyone with concerns should come forward. “
