112 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa schools, 15 school outbreaks – .


OTTAWA – A school in Barrhaven has been closed following an outbreak of COVID-19. The Ottawa Catholic School Board says Ottawa Public Health has declared an outbreak at St. Benedict Elementary School.

As of Tuesday, at least 13 cases of COVID-19 had been confirmed at school.

In an updated statement via email on Tuesday evening, the board said, “After further investigation, SPO has declared an extension of the outbreak. The whole school has been closed, out of caution, as our investigation suggests there is evidence of the spread of COVID-19 to multiple cohorts in the school. “

After school on Tuesday, officials from SPO were at school to distribute COVID-19 test kits.

The board says that SPO will continue to work with the school to monitor the situation.

It’s unclear how long the school shutdown will last, but SPO has sent a letter to parents and guardians suggesting they prepare for 10 days or more.

Ottawa’s four major school boards are reporting 112 active cases of COVID-19 among themselves Tuesday afternoon and Ottawa Public Health is reporting 15 ongoing outbreaks.

The severity of the illness among students and school staff is unknown, but Ottawa Public Health is not reporting any COVID-19 patients under the age of 20 in hospitals or intensive care units.

The COVID-19 epidemics are affecting 12 elementary schools, two high schools and one elementary / secondary school in the city.

An outbreak is defined as two cases of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 students, staff or visitors in a specified class during a 14-day period when at least one case could reasonably have acquired the infection. to school (including transport and before / after school worrying).

Ottawa Public Health does not provide the immunization status of people who test positive for COVID-19.
