Former UFC flyweight champion Nicco Montano was fired by the promotion after losing weight for a bantamweight fight with Wu Yanan on July 31, several people with knowledge of the news told MMA. Fighting.
Montano (4-3) broke the seven-pound bantamweight limit last weekend in Las Vegas. The bout was eventually pulled from the roster, bringing his troubled four-year run for the company fighter to a close.
Former King of the Cage flyweight champion, Montano became the UFC’s first 125-pound belt holder by defeating Roxanne Modafferi in The Ultimate Fighter 27 final in 2017, but was later stripped naked after being hospitalized with poor weight reduction ahead of her first title defense against Valentina Shevchenko.
Montano switched to bantamweight and returned to action almost a year later, losing a decision to Julianna Pena. Montano has had several canceled fights since then, retiring from matches with Macy Chiasson, Julia Avila (twice), Karol Rosa and Yanan.
Montano posted a statement on social media following his latest weight loss, stating “I’m learning it only makes me stronger and more resilient for what’s to come. “
