Rescue helicopters and ambulances were dispatched to the scene near Milavce, near the border with Germany, as the tragedy unfolded shortly after 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek said that one of the trains did not stop for a signal and collided with the other train, calling the situation “serious”.
A spokesperson for the ambulance service told local media that two people died at the scene, seven were in critical condition and 31 others were being treated.

The national police tweeted: “Today, shortly after 8 am, two trains collided on the way to the village of Milavce in the Domazlice region. “
Mr. Havlicek wrote: “Train crash. Train Ex 351 passed a stopped signal in the switch from Radonice to Domazlice and collided with a passenger train.
” The situation is serious.
“I am on my way to the scene of the accident. “
The railway administration agency wrote on Twitter: “Two trains collided between Domazlice and Blizejov stations. We regret to say that there were injuries. “
The Czech Republic has suffered several rail tragedies in recent months.
In April, a locomotive driver was killed when two freight trains collided near the village of Svetec in the northwest.
An official said at the time that one of the drivers did not stop before a signal.
