Toronto hospital network plans to lay off employees who do not get vaccinated – Toronto – .

A Toronto hospital network is considering laying off employees who do not get the COVID-19 vaccine.

A statement from the University Health Network (UHN) on Friday said they had contacted more than 900 staff who had not provided their immunization status or said they had not been vaccinated.

“We have indicated that they should have their first shot by September 8, allowing a second shot by October 8,” the statement said.

“After October 8, if they are not vaccinated, they will be put on unpaid leave for two weeks. If it is still their decision after two weeks, it is that they will not be vaccinated after that date, their employment at UHN will end.

Until recently, UHN had implemented a pilot program in which employees were tested at home three times a week, but this week it was decided that a vaccination mandate would be implemented, according to the communicated.

UHN said on Wednesday it was considering placing unvaccinated staff on unpaid leave, but no further information was provided immediately.

“UHN cares for extremely ill and often immunocompromised people. We do everything we can to protect our patients and the people who care for them, ”the statement read.

“The Delta variant is extremely contagious and we are seeing the number of cases increase, so we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of patients and employees. “
