What a difference five years can make.

Armed with an ever-famous marketing campaign, David Ayer’s PG-13 film “Suicide Squad” opened in 2016 with a record breaking weekend of $ 133.7 million nationwide and ended its release in theaters with a gross worldwide total of $ 746 million.

This week’s critically acclaimed R-rated version of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” faces a whole different market – a market ravaged by COVID-19 and the recent Delta variant having a huge impact on overseas markets. Nationally, cinemas are still on a slow rise towards recovery.

As a result, multiple outlets are reporting that Gunn’s ‘Squad’ opened for $ 4.1 million in Thursday night previews and is now on track for an opening weekend. at least $ 30 million domestically and another $ 40 million opening weekend overseas, quite possibly much higher.

This preview number is easily the biggest R-rated movie launch since the pandemic began. The film also landed a day and date release on HBO Max where it became available last night.
