During the pre-season game for Week 3 in Pittsburgh, aka “dress rehearsal”, Freiermuth lit up the scoreboard. Week three of the NFL preseason (as it was with the Steelers and Dallas Cowboys) is called the dress rehearsal because the action is as close as fans will see it to reality. ‘early in the regular season – without giving the playbook too much away, of course.
And while the Steelers didn’t give too much, all signs were that their second-round draft pick was an early and often red zone target.
“I wish other teams didn’t know too much about him,” Roethlisberger joked when asked how Freiermuth could be better.
Roethlisberger and Freiermuth, who both made their preseason debuts (and likely their final) on Saturday, showed instant chemistry. Big Ben connected with “Baby Gronk” on two short distance scores, the Steelers’ only touchdowns of the night.
As former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch pointed out on the game’s TV show, Freiermuth has never dropped a red zone pass in three college seasons. In fact, his 16 touchdowns are a Penn State record for a tight end.
