Shang-Chi star Simu Liu responds to Disney CEO on experience remark – The Hollywood Reporter – .

Simu Liu responded to a comment from Disney CEO Bob Chapek on Saturday when he said the next Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings was an “experience” for the company.

Chapek made the remark during an earnings call Thursday while discussing the conglomerate’s future plans for theatrical releases, calling Shang-Chi “An interesting experience for us” because the film only has a 45-day cinema window. Shang-Chi with free guy (out Friday), will not be available on Disney + Premier Access, despite the ongoing pandemic.

Liu, who plays Marvel hero Shang-Chi, was not happy with the comment and responded via social media.

“We are not an experiment,” he began. “We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling breakers. We are the celebration of the culture and the joy that will endure after a difficult year. We are the surprise. I am fired to make history on September 3; JOIN US. “

Shang-Chi will arrive on Disney + 45 days after its September 3 release. “The prospect of being able to put a Marvel title to service after hitting theaters for 45 days will be another data point to inform our upcoming actions on our titles,” Chapek said on the call.

Shang-Chi marks the second Disney film starring Asian American stars to be released amid the pandemic. The first was Mulan, which was released on September 4, 2020. This movie was available on Disney + Premier Access the same day.
