Sergio Aguero: Barcelona striker absent for 10 weeks with calf injury

Sergio Aguero will have to wait to make his Barcelona debut after it was confirmed that a calf injury ruled out the striker for 10 weeks.

Barca are set to start their first La Liga campaign since 2003-04 without Lionel Messi, who bid farewell on Sunday after the club were unable to keep the Argentinian.

As the club prepare to live without the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, their future plans have taken another blow with news of Aguero’s injury just six days before the league’s opener against the Real Sociedad.

Aguero joined as a free agent this summer after his 10-year stay at Manchester City ended, and the 10-week absence means he might not make his first Barca appearance until late October at most early.

“Tests carried out on first team player Kun Aguero confirmed an injury to his right calf. He will be absent for ten weeks, ”Barcelona said in a statement.

The 33-year-old suffered injuries in the later stages of his ten-year stay at Manchester.

Aguero has scored 184 goals in 275 Premier League games in 10 years, including four in 2020-21 after 12 appearances.

He suffered from knee and hamstring problems last season and also missed 10 games in all competitions when he contracted coronavirus.

Aguero ended his City career with two goals in the campaign’s final game against Everton, and then signed for Barcelona on May 31.

“We all know Barcelona are the best club in the world so I think I made the right decision to be here and hope to help the team,” he said after signing a contract for two years.

“Of course it’s a step forward in my career and I hope I can help the team win things. I want to play and help this team, and if the team does it well, I will be happy individually. “

Barca also signed Dutch striker Memphis Depay after his contract at Lyon expired.
