Sebastian Vettel’s second place at the Hungarian GP is in serious doubt due to an alleged violation of fuel rules.

Vettel was referred to the stewards by FIA F1 technical delegate Jo Bauer, who confirmed on Sunday evening that the German car Aston Martin contained insufficient fuel at the end of the race.

F1 regulations state that “Competitors must ensure that a 1.0 liter fuel sample can be taken at any time during the event” – and only an insufficient volume of 300ml could be taken from the car from Vettel to Budapest.

A representative of the team was summoned by the stewards at 7.20pm UK time.

Sebastian Vettel praised Esteban Ocon after the Aston Martin driver only managed to run for second in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

“After the race it was checked on car number 05 if a 1.0 liter fuel sample could be taken from the car,” Bauer’s statement read. “It was possible to take only a 0.3 liter sample by following the procedures set out in Article 6.6.4 of the 2021 Formula 1 Technical Regulations.

“Therefore, I refer this matter to the Stewards for consideration, as this does not comply with Article 6.6.2 of the Formula 1 2021 Technical Regulations.”

Vettel, who achieved his best Aston Martin ranking on Sunday, stopped his Aston Martin on track after the checkered flag and returned to the pits on foot.

If disqualified, Lewis Hamilton would move up to second, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz would take third.
